Your child\u2019s doctor will tell you how often to change the trach tube. You\u2019ll need to change it before the next scheduled time if there is an emergency (see below).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When is it an emergency?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You need to change your child\u2019s trach tube right away if:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The tube is blocked<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The tube slips out of your child\u2019s trachea<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A suction catheter cannot pass through the trach tube<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The tube\/cuff does not stay blown up (inflated)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Your child shows signs of having trouble breathing:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Skin is pale or looks blue<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Muscles between the ribs pull inward (called retractions)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Flaring of the nostrils&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A higher heart rate<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You do not see your child\u2019s chest rising and falling as usual (or at all)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What supplies do I need to change a trach tube?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To change the tube you will need:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Oximeter<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Self-inflating resuscitation bag with pop-off valve and facemask<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Oxygen<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Suction machine and &nbsp;the right size catheter<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2 trach tubes: 1 that is the same size&nbsp; and 1 that is one size smaller<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Trach tie<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Stoma dressing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Syringe<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Water-soluble lubricant (washes off in water)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Scissors<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Clean, moistened gauze<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>For double lumen tubes:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Make sure the obturator is in place in the tube.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Check that the disposable inner cannula is readily available for insertion (if you tube has one) once the tube is in your child.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>For adult Bivona tubes: <\/strong>Make sure the obturator lock is working the right way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How do I prepare and change the trach tube?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Download the following education sheet for step-by-step instructions on how to prepare to change the trach tube and how to change the trach tube.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link has-white-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color wp-element-button\" href=\"https:\/\/cape.childrenshospital.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Trach_changing.pdf\" style=\"background-color:#003087\">Trach tube changing education pdf<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Whom can I call if I have questions?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>If your child needs emergency help, call 911 right away.<\/strong> For more information, please call your primary care provider.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>How do I know when to change my child\u2019s trach tube?
