This natural process does not happen with a tracheostomy (trach) tube. People with a trach tube need to add humidification to keep their airway from drying out. This helps to thin out secretions (mucus).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Your child must have either a trach collar or Heat Moisture Exchanger (HME) for humidification to be used.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Do not use an HME when your child is:<\/strong>\u00a0\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Alone<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sleeping<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You should use a trach collar mist overnight while your child is sleeping.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What supplies do I need to put my child on humidification?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The right size tracheostomy collar (pediatric or adult)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Corrugated tubing (of a length that will work best for you and your child)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Condensation drainage bag<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Large volume nebulizer<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Distilled or sterile water<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Air compressor unit (please know that air compressors are very loud)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Oxygen (if your doctor tells you it is needed)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Humidification using a large volume nebulizer trach collar and using HME<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Download the following education sheet for step-by-step instructions on humidification using a large volume nebulizer trach collar, and humidification using HME (when your child is awake and you are watching him or her).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button is-style-outline is-style-outline--1\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link has-white-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color wp-element-button\" href=\"https:\/\/cape.childrenshospital.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/trach_humidification.pdf\" style=\"background-color:#003087\">Humidification education pdf<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Important tips<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When giving humidification and general trach care, it\u2019s important to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Know your child\u2019s usual breathing rate (breaths per 1 minute) while your child is asleep and awake.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Know your child\u2019s pulse rate and oxygen saturation as it reads on the oximeter. <strong>Call your doctor if either number is out of the normal range.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You can use a small volume nebulizer with normal saline for additional humidification when you are not at home with your usual mist setup.
